No.4 at the End of the East

When I was a kid, I was often watching the TV program, “Special Mission Research 200X” The contents of the program conducs researches about paranormal phenomena and mysterious incidents to uncover their secrets and go into a new world. I had been fascinated with the variety of pictures constituted like a drama and sitting with excited feeling in front of a TV set at every Sunday 8 PM. Looking back them, there were lots of uncertain phenomena such as UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal), the prophecies of Nostradamus, and the Bermuda Triangle, but I was really enjoying knowing the worlds which were totally different from my world. The name of the fictitious company investigating some incidents is ”Far East Research Corporation”. I just found the name “Cool!”, but it means that the drama was literally being taken place in Far East. Eastern part of Siberia and East Asia are called “Far East”. It’s because the name had been made by Western society. Of course there is no center of the world’s surface, but I like this name. In Japanese language, this word is written as “極東”. “極” means the end or edge, and “東” means East. I just find the meaning, The end of East, “Cool!”

No.4 東の果てより

　子供の頃、「特命リサーチ200X」というテレビ番組が好きだった。超常現象や怪事件の調査を行い隠されていた謎や未知の世界に迫る、という内容だ。ドラマのように構成された様々な映像に魅了され、日曜8時に僕はテレビの前で毎回ワクワクしながら見ていた。UMAやノストラダムスの予言、バミューダトライアングルなど、今考えてみると怪しい情報ばかりであったが、自分の住んでいる世界とかけ離れている世界を知ることはとても面白かった。そしてこの調査を行っていた架空の民間機関の名称が「ファー・イースト・リサーチ社」だった。その時は「何だかカッコイイ響きの名前だな」としか思わなかったが、これは即ち名前の通り、極東での物語なのだ。ウラジオストクが位置するシベリア東部と東アジアは極東と呼称される。つまりは西洋社会を中心とした場合の呼び名である。球体である地球の表面に中心などあるわけないのだが、個人的にこの名前は気に入っている。「東の果て」という意味も何だかカッコいいから。

No.3 Looking Back on My Life towards the Future

This ferry is operated by Korean company and most of the passengers are Korean. In addition, restaurants and many goods in shops are Korean style. Although this ferry was still sailing in the territorial waters in Japan, I felt as if I was in a foreign country. I had been tired because I took many trains and buses so far, went to bed at early night. In the second day morning, this ferry was sailing in the territorial sea of Korea and got to Donghae before noon. we were staying here for about 4 hours. Except for signboards and traffic signs written in Korean language, scenery here is almost similar to provincial cities in Japan. “Adjoining things affect each other” is not confined to physical phenomena. Human beings, cultures and traditions are not able to be independent forever, and not able to keep itself as it is if they are isolated. I’m looking forward to see how they change during traveling from the Asian side to the European side.

No.3 明日に向かって振り返る

　この船が韓国を中心にして運行しているからなのか、旅客の大半は韓国人だ。また、船内のレストランや売店の商品の多くは韓国系である。まだ日本の領海内を航行しているとはいえ、既に異国に来ているような感じだ。連日移動を繰り返していたこともあり、この日は早々に床に着いた。二日目の朝、船は韓国領内を航行しており昼前には東海についた。ここで4時間ほどの滞在だ。看板や標識がハングルで書かれていることを除けば、日本の地方都市の町並みに実によく似ている。「近くにあるものは互いに影響し合う」というのは、何も物理現象に限った話じゃない。人も文化も伝統も、永久的に独立を維持することできないし、孤立したままではその存在を保てない。アジアからヨーロッパに向かって旅をするとき、それらがどのように変わって行くのか、実に楽しみだ。

No.2 Dropping in and Going around

I arrived at the ferry terminal of Sakaiminato before sunset. The ferry departing here sails to Donghae, Korea and Vladivostok, Russia. There used to be the other passenger ships from Yokohama, Niigata, and Toyama, Japan to some Russian cities, but now we can only take this ferry and the small ferry connecting Wakkanai, Japan to Sakhalin, Russia during summer. The grater part of overseas lines for passengers going to Korea, China and Taiwan have been abolished. Except for luxury liners, It is only for the people who have a lot of free time to take the trouble to take the ferry, in spite of the fact that we can take LCC for cheap price nowadays. When I was talking with my friends about my journey, I often told them the reason I would take ferry “There is a dream on the sea…”, such an obscure answer. That’s because there is no special reason.

No.2 道々、寄り道、回り道。

　境港のフェリーターミナルには夕暮れ前に到着した。ここから出る船は日本の境港と韓国の東海、そしてロシアのウラジオストクをつないでいる。かつては横浜や新潟、富山からロシアへ向かう定期船もあったが、現在はこの船と、稚内とサハリンをつなぐ夏季限定の定期船を残すのみだ。他にも韓国や中国、台湾への貨客船もあったが、大半は廃止されてしまった。日本から外国にいく場合、豪華客船に乗るというならいざ知らず、安価で利用できるLCCが世界中に普及した昨今において、わざわざ船で海外に行くなんてのは暇人のすることだ。友人に旅の話をするときに船を使う理由として、「その方がロマンがあるから」とよく分からないことを適当に言っていた。つまりは特に理由なんてないのだ。

No.1 Going on a Straight Railroad or a Winding Road

Where would I go if I took long holidays? If they were 1 week, I could visit Canary islands and see dragon’s blood tree. 2 weeks, could go to some villages which have Tibetan cultures located in the northern part of India. 3 weeks, could get to the Northernmost place of European continent from Japan by only land and sea. 4 weeks …
